The formula for building an empire that shapes a better world is simple. It starts with a future idea and vision of the world, that’s communicated to a leader. You have the eyes and ears to see and hear what is invisible to others. This vision spoke to you, because you are the one that has the unrealised potential living within you. Dreams and visions are projections of this inner world of ours. So in order for you to see it, means it’s possible for you – and only you – to create.
I think we often doubt and question: Who are we to do that thing? What will people think? What if it doesn’t happen? I can’t do it. We need to start recognising that the dream spoke to us, because we actually have everything within us to be able to actualise it and make it happen. We just need to start believing we can do it, be gentle, kind, patient, persevere and stick at it along the way. You need to choose to take personal responsibility to believe in who you are and that dream each and every day.
A great book that speaks to the importance of self-belief in this way is Talent Is Overrated: What Really Separates World-Class Performers from Everybody Else by Geoffrey Colvin. It’s a great book which de-bunks all the ideas around the myths of world- class performers. We often think, oh, someone is successful at that because they were born with it. But through over 150 years of research, they have found the number one predictor of performance is consistent effort. Pretty much – just don’t give up. Keep showing up and believing in the vision every day. Don’t let haters, other doubts, nay-sayers, opinions, judgements, setbacks and mistakes hold you back. Just keep showing up, listening to your business empress and emperor within and lead from that divine clarity and confidence.
In order to define your movement, you will meet these problems, and will need to choose differently.
Problem #1 – You have been choosing mediocrity over greatness. SOLUTION: It’s time to give yourself the permission to be great.
Problem #2 – Your fears have become your limits.
SOLUTION: It’s time to stop identifying with your stories, fears and limitations, by staying rigid in an identity that prevents you from realising your greatest potential.
Problem #3 – You have been waiting for it to be handed to you.
SOLUTION: It’s time to stop waiting, and start creating your destiny by who you choose to be and what you choose to do daily.
Problem #4 – You haven’t taken the steps yet to determine product-to-market fit.
SOLUTION: It’s time to stop building your business off instinct alone, and take the necessary steps to create the solution to the very real problem your clients are wanting you to deliver to them, and get product-to-market fit by making it world-class.
Problem #5 – You have been selling products and services, not your movement.
SOLUTION: People buy your movement, they want to be part of something and feel a sense of belonging with like-minded people. Start speaking to a future idea of the world, and invite them to be part of it, to co-create it with you.
Problem #6 – You have been seeing your clients as numbers, not family.
SOLUTION: Start treating your clients like family; see them as a lifelong person you will have a relationship with. Deliver results, preserve the relationship, repair conflicts, make them feel special and significant to ensure they become raving fans and generate referrals to build the movement.
Problem #7 – You haven’t merged profit and purpose yet.
SOLUTION: Stop treating your business like a hobby or charity. Value purpose, by valuing profit too. You need to be profitable, and build your empire in a sustainable and scalable way, if you want to stand the test of time and be successful with the impact that you know you are destined to create in this world.
